Prinicpal Node.js Engineer
Location: Hamburg, Germany or St Julians, Malta - Hybrid (3 day in, 2 out)
Relocation bonus available - no sponsorship.
We’re looking for a Principal Node.js Engineer to lead the extension and improvement of backend services, with a strong focus on scalability, performance, security, and maintainability. You’ll play a key role in transforming a core PHP monolith into a secure, well-architected set of decoupled services while contributing high-quality TypeScript and NestJS code.
You’ll work closely with technical and product leadership to shape the long-term technical strategy, drive architectural decisions, and improve development practices. You’ll also mentor engineers, lead technical discussions, and work across APIs, payment systems, data tracking, testing, and cloud infrastructure.

What we’re looking for:
- 7+ years of professional TypeScript/Node.js experience
- Strong experience with service architecture and DDD
- PHP 7/8 experience for working with legacy codebases
- Strong testing experience across unit, integration, and end-to-end testing
- Experience with high-load, multi-server Node.js applications and APIs
- Strong knowledge of relational databases and container technologies
- Cloud experience, ideally GCP
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex or Gemini
- Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Strong mentoring and technical leadership skills
- Experience working with agile methodologies, particularly Kanban
- Fluent technical and business English
- Games industry or game development experience
- Full-stack development experience
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Redis, Memcache or Pub/Sub
- Experience with observability tools such as Sentry and Datadog
- Experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL
- Experience integrating APIs, payment systems, or data tracking
- Interest in AI-assisted development and evolving engineering workflows
